Advice on Making Requests
FORMALITIES
Choosing the right music for YOUR wedding is important in making the evening a complete success. We always recommend to all clients to use your own music tastes, and that of all your guests as inspiration for making your requests. Look at your music collections and pay attention when listening to the radio. This helps you choose songs that mean something to you as individuals and couples.
You can find a PDF that describes the formalities, what type of song to suggest and some popular selections here.
DANCE MUSIC
Having attempted to convince you to choose different songs for your formalities we will now try and convince you to do almost the opposite for your dance requests. By all means include your favorite songs, but especially when these songs are not the most popular dance songs make sure you leave the DJ with the ability to play more popular songs around these songs to ensure that people keep dancing. Always remember to make your requests with your guests in mind as your family and friends may not have the exact same music taste as you and your fiancé. Please remember at most receptions you have between 1.5 and 2.5 hours or dancing time which correlates to 25 to 45 songs.
Here is a PDF of popular dance selections grouped under headings which you might find useful when selecting songs.
BACKGROUND MUSIC
The background music is the music that will be played prior to your formal entrance, and during the meals between the formalities. It is played at a much lower level than all of the formal and dance music. You can choose to give us a specific artist or two, a specific genre or even a list of specific songs you would like played during this time. Some popular background music suggestions can be found here
MUSIC NOT TO BE PLAYED
This is where we ask you to let us know about songs that you definitely do not want played under any circumstances for whatever reason. Your DJ will stick to the genre’s and suggestions in your dance music selections so it is not necessary to fill in this section with songs that don’t fit your generic descriptions. For example if you have asked for 80’s funk, 70’s disco and the latest popular house music for your dancing it is unnecessary to put “Heavy Metal,” “Pub Rock” or “Country” in this section. If however you don’t want to hear songs that fit the genres like “Abba,” “Rick James” and “Bob Sinclar” then this would be what you put in this section of the form.
